Blameshift: Big Fun

2 August 2010 5 Comments

The Airwalk Unsigned Hero Tour began voting today for the band that will go on tour with AP. Blameshift, a big sound rock band from New York, is on the list of bands in the running.

What distinguishes them from the other bands on the list? They’ve probably got the same drive and same goals as all of the other bands. But Blameshift’s got a sound that is far too big to be kept quiet.

Jenny Mann’s vocals cover a broad range and she fits right into the upbeat songs that lead more toward Paramore’s sound, whilesmoothly transitioning into a darker Evanescence sound.

Not only is the band different and aiming for a big sound (they’re looking for longevity in the music industry), but the band has a ridiculously hilarious sense of humor.

I met with them in the cramped borrowed studio practice space in North Hollywood. Sitting on amps and whatever space was not occupied by cords or musical instruments, they kept me laughing throughout the entire interview. Immediately, I could tell they’re a band that’s all about having fun, though they’ve been very busy with their studio time in Los Angeles.

The New York band was able to travel to LA in their totally unique tour bus, thanks to the contribution of several fans on Kickstar. They raised 5,500 dollars and were able to come to record with a producer that they had never met, but who has worked with Panic! At the Disco and The Used.

Both of these bands have the big sound that Blameshift is looking to achieve.  They’ve been a band together for the past six years and have been on several tours including “Canadia” as Ben, bassist, jokingly calls Canada.

While being in California, Blameshift has made a couple of trips to Venice Beach (enjoying a drum circle), been to San Diego, Warped Tour and played a show at the House of Blues in Anaheim. They also took a trip to Vegas and in the last few days have been filming their music video in Salt Lake City. The rest of the band members include Tim Barbour, vocals and guitarist; and James Miller, drums.

The band does everything together, traveling in their tour bus that has a real sofa and real mattresses in it. The ceiling’s covered in pictures and writing from fans and people at shows, commemorating what a good time Blameshift seems to have everywhere they go.

“It’s the 4 of us, all day every day. So we do a lot of stuff to entertain ourselves,” Jenny said.

Some examples of their entertainment is playing pranks and filming them, including an all-out prank war while on tour with Sky Tells All. The competition got pretty fierce.

“They put shaving cream on my face on stage while I was playing,” Jenny said.

As payback, they changed Sky Tells All’s MySpace page to be completely covered in things having to do with Unicorns. Sky Tells All had borrowed Jenny’s laptop to go on MySpace and had left their page logged on.

Despite the fun and games, the band gets serious when it comes to recording and playing their music. I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek of one of the new songs on their albums. It’s music and sound really connected with me and I jokingly asked them if they were writing songs about my life.

Ben asked me if I was attributing the song to a boy, and I answered, “of course I was.”  But that’s not what the song itself is about.

“The song’s about addiction, but I like that other people can relate to it on different levels,” Ben said.

The new EP that they’ve been recording is going to be shopped out to different labels. From there they may release the EP or add more songs to make it into a full length album.

In the meantime, they’re excited about the new video release and their feature on the Airwalk website for the Unsigned Hero tour. Check them out and if you like them, show your support by voting for them.
