Travis Moor of The Hunger Artist Interview

4 December 2018 No Comment

Travis- THAThe Hunger Artist are pop-punky, jangly, dance inducing alt-rock hook guerillas whose lyrics would make Alkaline Trio need a hug and maybe some puppy therapy.   Probably pug puppies or maybe French Bulldogs. The Hunger Artist’s shiny new EP is entitled Uh… to which we say WHEEEE!!!!! Because it actually is stellar and free.  Here’s vocalist Travis Moor on the new EP and what makes an artist hungry.

What was the inspirational spark that brought you to create the new Uh. . . EP?

Uh . . . An inability to make sense of the duality of language and the paradox of life itself. I also was eating a lot of ramen.

“Uh. . .” sums up the confusion of dealing with the current day to day.  Was that what you were going for?

Basically. . . Kinda like emphasizing the struggle to understand each other, the world, but most importantly, ourselves.

Did your original vision for Uh. . . end up as the final recording or did the songs change and develop over time in the studio?

I added/wrote a new verse to “Darling Please” while we were in the studio. The demos for the songs are super similar to the final studio recordings but the studio stuff sounds better.

THA UhWhat image do you think your music conveys?

Hahahahahaha. Hopefully not much.

Did you do any vocal training for Uh. . .? And have there been any vocalists who have given you tips or you have emulated in your career?

I am completely self-taught . . . I really liked Robert Smith, Conor Obersts, and Elliott Smith. At one time I tried to sound like all of them.

Which do you prefer? Writing new songs and recording or playing for a live audience?

It depends on if the show is killer or not. I will always love writing and recording. I will always hate bad shows.

How did you decide on the style and tone of Hunger Artist’s music?  Was it a natural occurrence that just felt right or was it completely by design?

Well I’m an organic machine that came upon the sounds naturally. Is that by design?

What’s your favorite aspect of being a musician?

I haven’t been anyone else so I’m not sure I can judge. I have fun.

What are your thoughts on the current state of the musical world?

I hope that people start promoting and supporting artists that make good art. There are a lot of good artists out there and they’re overshadowed by local frat boi scenes. We’ve already got a guy that boofs in the Supreme Court. Maybe it’s time.

For anyone that doesn’t know you, what would they be surprised to know about you?

I love Taylor Swift’s 1989 album.

What will Hunger Artist be up to in 2019?

Recording a lot. Thinking of doing a small regional tour but who knows. It all depends on what happens next.
