Mayhem Fest 2011

2 July 2011 No Comment

Mayhemfest is here once again, kicking off on July 9th; the beginning of what has become the biggest metal and rock festival tour of the summer.  In the fourth installment, the brain behind Mayhem, Kevin Lyman, has assembled some Mayhemfest alums, as well as some fresh new faces that are amongst the hottest bands of the genre(s) and Hollywood Music is proud to once again be a sponsor.

The main stage is expanded this year, with 6 bands slotted and the second stages are shorter.  Headlined by Disturbed, who appeared at the first Mayhem, the main stage also features Godsmack, Megadeth, Machinehead, In Flames and Trivium.  Southern California fans should take notice that at the first date in Devore, Megadeth and In Flames will not be performing, replaced by Testament and Dethklok respectively.

Fresh off the Music as a Weapon Tour V with Korn, Sevendust, In This Moment and Stillwell, returning to the Mayhem stage will be the unmistakable sound of Disturbed that co-headlined the first Mayhemfest with Slipknot in 2008.

With 5 studio albums in the rearview mirror, the last being Oracle released last year, Godsmack proves year in and year out to be one of the highest grossing touring artists, fueled by the unique voice and memorable performance of front man, Sully Erna.

After the hugely successful Big 4, thrash legends Megadeth will bring the most experience to the tour this year and prove year in and year out that Dave Mustaine has no intentions of slowing down.  Swedish death metal gods, In Flames, are a must see and as a huge fan, this writer is excited to see them on the bill.  Same goes for the legendary Machinehead, who move from the second stage to the main stage this year and rightly so.

The Revolver second stage is power packed starting with Straight Line Stitch.  If you have yet to experience SLS, be prepared to witness what you will at first shake your head in disbelief.  Fronted by Alexis Brown, you will be amazed at the sheer explosiveness of her voice and performance.  Take the opportunity to meet her either before or after and you will be in even more shock.  The diminutive, seemingly shy and unassuming Alexis is the antithesis of what she unleashes on stage.

Joining SLS on the Revolver stage are Mayhem alumni, Suicide Silence, in support of their latest release The Black Crown, as well as one of the hottest bands in the scene, All Shall Perish.  Not to be outdone, the neighboring Jagermeister mobile stage will feature three bands popping their Mayhem cherry, so to speak but are no virgins when it comes to face melting metal.  Although Jamey Jasta fronted Hatebreed at last year’s festival, this year he will be annihilating the stage alongside of Crowbar/Down guitarist Kirk Windstein with the metal super group Kingdom of Sorrow.

Also coinciding the tour with a new release will be Unearth supporting on the Jagermeister stage following Oregon metalers, Red Fang, poised to show everyone how they decimate the crowd when they open the show.  Metal purists will be in Devore early, braving the desert temperatures as soon as gates open as the second stage bands are sure to supply even more heat.

It is quite an interesting mixture this year for the tour, which should appeal to an even greater audience.  Everybody has their own opinion of what the line-up should be each year, but in the end, Kevin Lyman has put together another solid show that runs the gamut of metal/hard rock and the show will be a summer highlight for those that attend as they weave their way across the country.
